WHAT AGES DO YOU ASSESS?
The broad response is that I assess individuals of all ages, however, to better address this question, it is important to discuss the reason for the referral.
HOW ARE YOUR ASSESSMENTS DIFFERENT FROM TEACHER ASSESSMENTS?
The assessments administered by Registered Psychologist or School Psychologist are standardized norm referenced assessments. Standardized means that the test is administered to all individuals the same way. Norm-referenced means that I will be comparing the individual to other individuals their age.
PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENTS
All individuals have areas of strength and areas of need. Sometimes those areas of needs get in the way of academic success. A psychoeducational assessment, or psych-ed. for short, can help you understand why your child is struggling to succeed academically and, if applicable, why they are displaying social, emotional, or behavioural challenges.
A psych-ed. assessment is a detailed assessment of an individual’s psychological and academic skills. It involves conducting specialised tests and tasks, which use a variety of tools to develop a complete perspective of your child’s academic skills and cognitive abilities. It can identify things such as Learning Disabilities, ADHD, mood disorders, and behavioural disorders. In my opinion, a diagnosis is not the focus, rather, understanding ones own learning leads to strategies and tools that can help achieve tremendous success at school, at home, and in the community.
A psych-ed. is completed by a certified School Psychologist or a Registered Psychologist. They are trained in the administration of standardized measures of cognition, attention, language and academic functioning and are knowledgeable about available evidence-based treatment approaches.
